We’ll get our first look at first-year head coach Curt Cignetti’s progress with the team this week as Indiana football officially kicks off their spring game Thursday night at 8pm inside Memorial Stadium. The spring game will mark the end of the spring practice session which lasted roughly a month.

Over the past several years, the Indiana Hoosiers have had some elite position groups from top to bottom. Some that come to mind after talking with our own Sammy Jacobs include the 2013 QB room with Sudfeld, Roberson, and Coffman, the 2020 CB room with Mullen, Taylor, and Williams, the 2013 RB room with Coleman, Houston, and Roberts, the 2015 OL room with Feeney, Stepaniak, Martin, and Spriggs, and even LB rooms consisting of Scales, Oliver, and Covington to McFadden, Jones, and Casey more recently.

The excitement is buzzing around the Indiana football program and now we’re entering a critical time to start building for next season: spring football. This will be Coach Cignetti’s first spring with the Hoosiers and today we’ll highlight what projects to be a strong unit for him, the wide receiver room. The 2022 season was a highly-frustrating one for Indiana football coaches, fans and players. Among the frustrated individuals was surely Omar Cooper. The former four-star recruit was a freshman that was not seeing the field for an offense that was struggling mightily with quarterback Connor Bazelak and a lackluster offensive line.

The Hoosiers special teams unit could be one of the best in the Big Ten in 2023 if coordinator Kasey Teegardin can put all the pieces together. The Hoosiers have some potentially great pieces at every position of this phase of the game headlined by All-American kick returner Jaylin Lucas.

Heading into the 2022 season there were two really intriguing true freshman wide receivers that could have been labeled as sleeper picks to be a breakout star for the offense. However, that never materialized as both Omar Cooper and Kamryn Perry retained their redshirt seasons and played a combined five games with zero catches. The Hoosiers are hoping that they can have the break out seasons that fans envisioned in 2023.
