Indiana all-purpose back Jaylin Lucas has entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal. Lucas led the Big Ten in kick return yards (1,163) the last two seasons with three touchdowns. Lucas also scored four touchdowns on offense in 2023 and two in 2022.

The Indiana University football team continues to prepare for the 2023 season, working hard in fall camp which has now entered its third week. The running game has struggled for the past couple of seasons but with a talented group of backs and a offensive line coach, there is hope that the Hoosiers can exceed the 3.36 yards per carry they averaged in 2022. IU has not exceeded four yards per carry in a season since 2018 when they ran for 4.41 yards per rush. Shaun Shivers has departed but IU returns Josh Henderson, Jaylin Lucas, Trent Howland and David Holloman and added Wake Forest transfer Christian Turner.

The Indiana University running game has not been a reliable weapon for a few seasons now. The Hoosiers averaged just 3.36 yards per carry in 2022. That came after averaging 3.2 yards per carry in 2021 and just 3.13 yards per carry in 2020. You need to go back to 2018 to feel good about the rushing attack (4.41 yards per carry). Some of the lack of success needs to fall at the feet of the running backs but the offensive line is a major culprit as well.
