2023 Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 13 Days (Kam Perry)

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

The 2023 edition of the Hoosier Huddle Countdown is officially underway! We are counting down from 100 to the beginning of the 2023 Indiana University football season. Each day, we will take a look at one (or two) players on the current Indiana football roster and highlight the player’s role in the upcoming season. Today’s article is a wide receiver that is getting buzz as a potential breakout candidate in 2023: redshirt freshman Kamryn Perry.

Name: Kamryn Perry

Hometown: Marietta, GA (Marietta High School)

Position: Wide Receiver

Year: Redshirt Freshman

Height/Weight: 5’9”/158 pounds

A fair criticism of Indiana’s wide receiver room in the past four or five seasons would be that the Hoosiers have too many “Cadillacs” and not enough “sportscars”. That is to say, the IU wide receiver room had a lot of big-bodied wideouts that could be good possession targets but had a dearth of players that were shifty, speedy and could get separation against press coverage. A change in position coach has shifted IU’s focus at the group and Kamryn Perry is a very exciting part of that drive to add more speed to the unit.

Kamryn Perry came to Indiana prior to the 2022 season after a terrific senior season at Marietta High School in Georgia. He caught 63 passes for 1,116 yards with 20 touchdowns and was a first-team all-region selection in the talent-rich Peach State. He played in only one game in the 2022 season, making his collegiate debut against Penn State on November 5. Perry redshirted the season and still has four years of eligibility remaining. The wide receiver room looks quite a bit different than it did when he committed to the Hoosiers. There are a number of new faces and diversified skillsets and body types as IU looks to find more explosiveness in the passing game. The number one wideout, if he’s healthy, will be Cam Camper. There is no certainty beyond that but the Hoosiers have a whole lot of options: E.J. Williams, Donaven McCulley, Andison Coby, Jaquez Smith, and Omar Cooper should all factor in. Kamryn Perry is likely to be playing in the slot. Fordham transfer Dequece Carter is a veteran with a lot of experience. He can play in the slot or on the outside and all-purpose star Jaylin Lucas will see some time in the slot as well. Perry is going to get a shot though. His speed and explosiveness jump out and he offers the type of quick-twitch slot the IU offense desperately needs.
